WATCH THIS SESSION ON-DEMAND

This session will help define what trauma is, the types, signs and symptoms, and its impact on our lives. Childhood trauma and abuse can disrupt development and lead to problematic personality issues, attachment and abandonment and relationship difficulties, as well as re-enactment in adult life. We will also discuss substance use disorder and its connection to underlying and unresolved trauma by reviewing where the impact of trauma can drive unhealthy or poor coping skills as a means of escape from significant emotional pain and inability to manage feelings. During our time, we will also highlight current evidence-based therapeutic practices, such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which help address and process trauma and lead to positive recovery outcomes.

THE TRUTH ABOUT TRAUMA: COPING WITH ISOLATION, LONELINESS AND GRIEF

There’s a common misconception about trauma — that it’s associated with just one significant event in a person’s life. Trauma is defined through the eyes of the individual who has experienced an emotionally difficult event or multiple events. In this session, we will take a deeper look into trauma and provide an overview of common mental health symptoms; an understanding of trauma and vicarious trauma as they pertain to isolation, loneliness and grief; the impact of COVID-19 on these areas; and an introduction to resources and connections that can help.
